Such a good point! I'm tweeting this (@MarComSpclst) because it's such strong advice.

The weighing of the direct mail from Verizon was an excellent tactic. How much bang are they getting from their marketing buck?

Great post!

Both of these issues are actually solved by Eventbrite (www.eventbrite.com) which is a free tool, unless you charge for your event.

Sara, I agree that nametags are important, preferably the preprinted kind. I dislike the Hello, my name is kind!

Great list! In particular I have to agree that #2, making time to actually network, is a no-brainer that MANY organizations overlook.

Another one that I would add: Nametags! In my field, web design, I know a lot of people virtually but not necessarily in person. Putting the name with the face is generally a real pleasure. I know some people don't like nametags, but I think for networking they are really useful and I find it frustrating to go to events that don't have them.

I would add mailing invitations in addition to advertising online and in print and broadcast methods. A well produced mailer sent to a targeted mailing list will do wonders for increasing the number of attendees.

Georgetown University has a an entire grad program on the subject called Communication, Culture and Technology.

Also, the field of intercultural communications would argue that culture and communication are related.

Well, to clarify: I wasn't so much asking whether culture affects communications (it clearly does), but rather whether you could single out social media as particularly "culture driven."

I like you post, and the tu | usted example is a great one. As someone who grew up using French in the formal old days, I'm still pretty programmed to use "vous" far more often than the more familiar "tu".

My comments here are based on my experience in the Restaurant, Hospitality and Service industries. So far, these businesses have been using Email Marketing for customer loyalty and retention and brand development. Mobile marketing has gained lot of traction in the last few years. Social Media Marketing has been new to this industry and marketing departments are scrambling to catch up to it.

My company <a href="http://www.sterizon.com/wihome/home.php?utm_source=wordpress&utm_content=cuppamarcomm" rel="nofollow">Sterizon</a> specializes in bringing Email, Mobile and Social Media Marketing in a single package right to the customer doorstep while the customer is at the place of business. We do it using a wireless, WiFi handheld gadget called <a href="http://www.sterizon.com/wihome/wizit.php?utm_source=wordpress&utm_content=cuppamarcomm" rel="nofollow">Sterizon wiZit</a>.

Social Media is here to stay, so, businesses might as well embrace it and use it to their advantage. Success of any marketing campaign depends on getting proper buy-in from the employees of your business. They are the ones who’ll be creating the buzz for you at your place of business as well as online.
